Snailing

2024

During extreme summer days in Israel, in late summer 2024, I notice dry bushes covered in white snails, a common sight in the hot Israeli summer. This particular snail manages to survive harsh heat and drought by climbing up bushes, distancing itself from the scorching ground, and retreating into its shell. It seals itself off from the outside world, reemerging only when conditions become less extreme.

I collect empty snail shells from nature. In my studio, I drill into their fragile walls, creating a personal opening for each shell. I inject cold enamel—red in color—in an attempt to strengthen them and prevent breakage.

I craft silver bushes, mimicking the way these snails accumulate on them in nature. I imagine such a possibility for myself—distancing from reality and returning only on peaceful days.
